It starts with Education.

Saltwater Classroom is a Maine-based 501(C)3 non-profit organization that is committed to a new wave of ocean education. We believe that the first step towards a sustainable future on our Blue Planet is a renewed emphasis on ocean literacy. From education stems passion, and from passion blooms stewardship.

Where it all
began.

In 2016, in a small school in the cerros, or hills, above a coastal Chilean city, Alexandra Doudera first had the vision for what would become Saltwater Classroom. She envisioned an opportunity for young students, like the ones pictured here, to learn about the ocean and connect with one another, growing a global network of ocean stewards.

A little more about Saltwater Classroom:

Saltwater Classroom is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to solve pressing ocean issues by instilling an ethic of ocean stewardship in young students, as well as learners of all ages, through the transformative power of education.

Through weeklong workshops driven by engaging lessons, hands-on experiments, meaningful field missions, and creative projects, Saltwater Classroom allows participants to connect with the marine environment and build a foundation for a lifelong commitment to ocean stewardship. Read more about our hands-on programming

This is further strengthened through the second component of Saltwater Classroom, a mobile phone/tablet application or web-based platform that allows participants around the world to connect and build a network of young students connected by a passion for the ocean. Discover our Phase II and learn more about our tech-integrated approach to environmental education.

It's this, the people behind Saltwater Classroom, that make our impact possible. It's a group of people that are passionate about our environment and our human connection to the sea. It's one that believes in the unique power of education and the strength of collaboration. We'd love you to get to know our people, this is where the magic happens.
